Benchmarking

How is your business really going?

Success and failure are relative concepts. That means that your business only does well or poorly by comparison with the competition. The way you find out where you stand is through benchmarking by an independent party. In that way you'll know whether you need to do things differently.

For benchmarking to be effective, it needs to be relevant to the businesses being measured. Benchmarking can be horizontal, ie. across an industry or group, or it can be sequential, ie. measuring your own progress over a period of time. Both methods are useful.

If you are involved with an industry association or a franchisor, benchmarking is a low cost way to provide a valuable service for your members and franchisees. Everyone likes to know how they are performing on a confidential basis, and it is something which binds them more closely to the organisation.
